Applesauce for the classroom

This was one of my favorite lessons with my club class students. We learned about Johnny Appleseed, did some sequencing activities with the recipe, then made applesauce. My students were older and mature enough to cut up the apples themselves. With younger students, it might be better to come with pre-cut apples.

Ingredients
8 sweet red apples
2 tbsp lemon juice
2 tbsp butter
1/2 cup of sugar
1 tsp cinnamon

1. Core the apples and cut them into small pieces.

2. Combine all the ingredients in a large pot and cover. Cook for 25-30 minutes, or until the apples are soft.

3. Puree in a food processor or blender.

4. Top with raisins or more cinnamon. Serve hot, or refrigerate and serve cold.
